Christmas Lights – How many should you use

Time to start thinking about Christmas Tree and house decorations for the holidays. And of course, the dreaded Christmas Light mess, or, as I like to call it the “LIGHTMARE”. See how to avoid the mess by clicking on “LIGHTMARE“. So, drag out your boxes, bags, or plastic containers full of tangled up lights and let’s get started. But, how many light do you really need for your tree? This is a good question to ask when you realize some of your tangled up lights no longer work. Believe it or not, there is some guidance. Three websites may help; 1. The national Christmas Tree Growers Association, 2. Planet Christmas, 3. Pick Your Own Christmas Tree.

What they basically say is 100 lights per foot of Christmas tree height. for a 7 foot tree, you would need 700 lights and so on. Personally, I like a bit more twinkly tree and therefore use about 1,000 lights for my 7 foot tree. One year while hanging Christmas lights around my tree, it seemed like I was doing a lot of walking around the tree and didn’t have too many lights. After a little research, I made a shocking discovery! Each manufacturer can place the lights at different intervals on the string. Some are placed 2 and 1/2 inches apart while others are placed 4 inches apart. This means 100 lights could be on a string as little as 24 feet long or up to 50 feet long, which is why I was walking around the tree so much and not seeing enough lights. Pay attention to what you are buying when purchasing Christmas lights. It could save you a lot of time. If time is important, check out STOR’EM at www.christmaslightorganizer.com for a great tool to help you save time hanging Christmas Lights as well as with your Christmas Light storage.

Most of us have experienced the frustration of Christmas Lights that don’t work any more. They did last year, but not this year. Why? The answer lies in the tiny copper wire inside the plastic cover. This tiny wire can only take a limited amount of bending and pulling before it fails. When it does fail, some or all of the lights on the string don’t work.

What can be done? This is a good question as light strings get more expensive and LED lights become more common. The answer is fairly simple, store them properly and they will last much longer. Some of the common Christmas light storage techniques are elbow wrapping, hand wrapping etc. and more commonly shoving them in a box, bag or plastic container as fast as you can after the holiday. Check out the photo’s below. We’re all probably guilty of that at least once or twice, right?! We do that because we don’t have a better way or just want to get it DONE. These kinds of Christmas Light storage actually contribute to the lights breaking prematurley. Stored properly, your lights could have a long life. Fortunately, there is a new product out there called STOR’EM that can be used to properly store Christmas lights, and other holiday decorations, that will make them last a long time. It combines a powered driver and spools eliminating sharp bends or angles, allows for a free hand to carefully wind the lights and is basically a storage container by itself. This device will save a great deal of time hanging Christmas Lights and storing Christmas Lights as well as saving money by increasing the useful life of the light string. It comes with the powered driver and 2 spools (enough for a 7 foot tree) and a connector. So eliminate the “HOLIDAY LIGHTMARE” and STOR’EM properly.

Well, it’s food for thought for all you planning and organizing types. Why? Because when you go into your attic, closet, basement, or garage looking for your holiday decorations, Christmas lights etc., I’m willing to bet you’ll be disappointed to see the condition they are in due to the way you stored them after the holidays last year. More specifically, take a look at your Christmas Light Storage box or method. This, of course, is assuming you have one. Most people either don’t have a system or method for Christmas Light storage or are unhappy with their current system or method. Now, take a look at your bag, box, or pile of Christmas light strings and think about how long it’s going to take you to untangle that mess, and, how many strings of lights are no longer going to work because you pulled them apart in frustration.
