Christmas Lights – How many should you use
Time to start thinking about Christmas Tree and house decorations for the holidays. And of course, the dreaded Christmas Light mess, or, as I like to call it the “LIGHTMARE”. See how to avoid the mess by clicking on “LIGHTMARE“. So, drag out your boxes, bags, or plastic containers full of tangled up lights and let’s get started. But, how many light do you really need for your tree? This is a good question to ask when you realize some of your tangled up lights no longer work. Believe it or not, there is some guidance. Three websites may help; 1. The national Christmas Tree Growers Association, 2. Planet Christmas, 3. Pick Your Own Christmas Tree.
What they basically say is 100 lights per foot of Christmas tree height. for a 7 foot tree, you would need 700 lights and so on. Personally, I like a bit more twinkly tree and therefore use about 1,000 lights for my 7 foot tree. One year while hanging Christmas lights around my tree, it seemed like I was doing a lot of walking around the tree and didn’t have too many lights. After a little research, I made a shocking discovery! Each manufacturer can place the lights at different intervals on the string. Some are placed 2 and 1/2 inches apart while others are placed 4 inches apart. This means 100 lights could be on a string as little as 24 feet long or up to 50 feet long, which is why I was walking around the tree so much and not seeing enough lights. Pay attention to what you are buying when purchasing Christmas lights. It could save you a lot of time.
